Default Do your eyes hurt?

How many hours a day do you spend sitting at a computer? I spend around 10-14 hours a day on a computer for about the last 3 years and I have noticed my eye sight getting worse all the time If the same thing is happening to you keep in mind these few helpfull exorcises.
1.Look away from your computer every 45-60 minutes and try to focus on a object 100ft away do this for 5 minutes then try to focus on a object 10ft away do this everyday.
2.move your computer monitor alittle farther back every day or 2 this can also help.
3.Take a Break.
These 2 exocises will help you results are not emmediate of course and could take you up to a year to start seeing any diference but it will help keep your eye sight from worsening.

hope that helps

Here's an exercise I found to relax your eye mucsles; close your eyes, tense up all your muscles and beathe deeply through your nose. At the same time, relax your muscles and exhale.

This exercise helps trick your eye muscles to relax.

tbh, when possible you should

1: Take a 5 min break every hour, get up, grab a beer etc, this also helps prevent DVT and the such
2: Keep the monitors refreshrate as high as you can, this helps *Most* peoples eyesight
3: Dont use too high a resolution, you shouldnt strain to read
4: Keep your desk well lit
5: keep a good position (back straight, arms almost parrallel to the floor, with a slight downwards tilt, not to close -but equally not to far- this can be much worse

this having been said, i run at 50Hz (any higher and i get strained eyes) and two monitors both @ 1600*1200 , some people are just more sensitive

If your eyes are hurting, it basically means you've been playing too long. You say you're in front of a computer for up to fourteen hours a day, which sounds insane..but if this is a as a result of your job I suppose it's understandable, and unavoidable.

Flat pannel displays also help minimize eye strain since they don't refresh-strobe. When I made the change from CRT to LCD, I noticed the difference almost immediately after a 14-hour marathon LAN party.

I found my eyes got sore after using LCD's for gaming. I'm no eye expert but I think it's because LCD's have ultra slow refresh rates (25ms~) so the motion blur gets pretty bad in FPS's or games like GW, and I think that's why. I found I was trying too much to focus on the blurry screen.

My eyes are fine, but then I don't play 14 hours a day, don't sit in complete dark and have an LCD monitor.

I find that having light on in your room while you play helps a lot with your eyes. A brightly-glowing monitor in complete darkness is very disruptive.

Not to be rude, but you really shouldn't be spending that amount of time in front of a computer screen.

But my advice is go outside for 1hr everyday. Breat in the fresh air. And remember to take all your vitamins^^

You will end up needing glasses very soon if you do not exercise your eyes.

Roll them around, look at something close then something far away. Looking at the same thing for hours and hours damages your eyes.

You should get a job or a girlfriend or hang out with your friends. Go see a movie or something.

But hope your eyes get better.

Sorry to say this, but that sounds like a really low-end LCD. Good models hit 60hz(DVI) no prob at < 12-16 ms response times. Ghosting isn't even visible with the newer fast-response LCD's.

I can see why your eyes hurt after that ordeal...

your monitor is the closest thing to staring into a light bulb. what do you expect?

best thing you can do for your eyes is not look at it up close, making your eyes focus on a distance object and then back is a fools tale. it doesnt magicly help your eyes, your eyes re-focus thousands of times a day; think about it.

Large screens and frequent short breaks are the key to me. For CRT's the glasses I wear I pay extra for a coating that blocks some light specially made for heavy computer users (I'm a software engineer - no real choice). I go to the water machine, candy machine, coke machine, something several times a day. Usually whenever I hit a good break spot in whatever part of the software lifecycle I'm doing - and I take a short 5 minute break at *every* one of them. It also helps maintain concentration all day to have those short breaks.

Though recently I switched to LCD monitors and like it a lot. Personally I feel better with a dual monitor setup when I can afford one (or the employer will provide one). Not really that useful for gaming, but code in one monitor and output or reference guides on the other means I refocusing and generally moving enough to feel better. Most computer heavy jobs can benefit from dual monitors both in terms of production and ergonomics.

For me, the largest problems is finger joints. I used to be really rough on keyboards due to hitting the keys hard (still am hard on them to some extent but for other reasons, though most gamers know about wearing WASD, ctrl, alt, and a few other keys out quickly ). I've never really had great joints (they pop and crack too much, a little arthritus in one joint by about 27-28 years of age), but I did some real long term damage to them.

Though, for long gaming sessions you are probably doing more damage from not moving your legs than anything (assuming that your keyboard, mouse, and monitor are properly placed, which just pretty much means comfortable and most of us do that anyway). I know I'm not the only one that gets into a game and finds I've sit totally imobile except for my hands for well over 8 hours from time to time. That's actually dangerous and can kill. While rare, as my generation ages (30-40 age - the "Nintendo generation" or "Atari generation" - whicever you prefer) it will become a bigger issue. I know that after a particularly long gaming session my left knee and right ankle is sore for about ten minutes after I start moving. It's not anything close to bad but will only get worse as I age.

Amusingly enough I like the "You have been playing for 1 hour" message many have complained about, I wish there were more games that did it. I remember to move a bit during long gaming sessions when it pops up, though I don't think that's why they added it.

And when you reach 4 hours, it tells you to take a break and stop playing

Isnt it 3 hrs? meh.

No offence, but 10-14hrs a day for the past 3 years is insane. I dont think its healthy to stare at a computer screen that long

If your eyes start to hurt, PLAY LESS.

It seems like an obvious sign.

Thats a good point, also if you have a CRT monitor always have it at highest possible refresh rate, or at least above 75 hertz. Flat panel screens are easier on eyes I heard.
